A Fabulous Encounter brings together Prince Henrik’s sculptures and Carl-Henning Pedersen’s paintings in a sensory encounter between imagination and reality. Two artists create a shared universe inhabited by mythical beings, dreams, and poetic narratives. The exhibition invites visitors on a journey into the borderland between fairy tale and imagination.
A Fabulous Encounter returns - now as a permanent exhibition
The Carl-Henning Pedersen & Else Alfelt Museum is pleased to present Prince Henrik’s sculptures in dialogue with paintings by Carl-Henning Pedersen in the exhibition A Fabulous Encounter. The exhibition is based on the 2017–18 presentation of the same name, which the Prince himself helped to create.
The current exhibition builds on the permanent transfer of a large part of Prince Henrik’s popular sculpture collection to the museum, which officially took place on Saturday 25 June 2022, when Queen Margrethe visited the museum.
In addition, Her Majesty the Queen has deposited a number of works from her private collection of the Prince’s sculptures for a period of years, which are also included in the exhibition.
Two Artists – A fantastical universe
A Fabulous Encounter is an artistic encounter between H.R.H. Prince Henrik’s monumental sculptures and the CoBrA artist Carl-Henning Pedersen’s imaginative pictorial universe. It is also a meeting between two magical worlds, where imagination leads us along winding paths into a new realm where fables coexist with reality and where dreams come to life.
What the two artists share is, among other things, that neither seeks to depict a one-to-one representation of the visible world. Instead, both create deeply personal, poetic universes that may be rooted in reality, but ultimately belong to the realm of imagination and storytelling. This is evident in Prince Henrik’s animal figures and creatures, which inhabit the borderland between reality and fable, and in Carl-Henning Pedersen’s dreamlike paintings, where time and place merge into timeless images.
So step into these magical worlds and be prepared to wander among mythical animals and powerful beings in a vibrant universe.
